Daniel O’Toole investigates the traversing of mediums; negotiating the crossover between painting, and the moving image.
Recent investigations see digital colour sensibilities transcribed from cropped video stills and polaroids. The digital images have been heavily processed with software to manipulate their colour and tonal values. O’Toole presents the painting as a spatial illusion; through the employment of semi-transparent acrylic sheeting, he is able to diffuse the images, gently unsettling their static nature.
The soft focus effect of the screen acts in creating tension through the saturation of painted forms, with a type of visual reverberation, reminiscent of analogue photography. The image clarity shifts transiently, with the movement of the viewer and the angle in which they are viewed.
